Bus Stop Planting
Initiated 2022
The Johnstown area has 12 bus stops that are well served for local and longer journeys.
Project aims:
Enhance the bus passenger's waiting and arrival experience.
Improve the presentation and 'kerb appeal' of bus stops.
Utilise suitably robust low-level plants that have minimum maintenance requirements.
Utilise devices to conserve water.
Incorporate pollinator-friendly planting to extend the 'Bee Corridor'.
Discourage littering.
Pilot Site
We propose a planting scheme using the Athlumney Hall bus stop as a pilot project which if successful could be repeated at others.
Site Description
Located at the northern entry into Johnstown the bus shelter on Metges Rd is served by the local NX bus route and is highly visible to road users, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Facing east the shelter has glass panels on 3 sides with a brick retaining wall allowing it to be recessed within a large steep grass bank.
Reasonable depth of clay soil in good condition with adequate drainage.
Sheltered from cold westerly winds.
With no public waste bin litter has been a problem.
Potential Planting Schedule
Winter - Various Heathers
Early Spring - Crocus
Mid Spring - Daffodils & Tulips
Late Spring - Bluebells
Summer to Autumn - Rudbeckia, lavender, sage, thyme.
Current Project Status
We had hoped to make a start in May 2022, but with fears that another hot summer would cause issues with watering needs ontop of the sunflower project the pilot scheme was postponed to 2023.
