Johnstown Sunflower Trail
Initiated 2019
The sunflower is one of the most iconic and best-loved flowers. A beneficial plant in gardens and our ecosystem they attract bees for their nectar, and their seeds attract wild birds such as Bullfinch, Coal Tit, Greenfinch, and the House Sparrow.
A pilot project in 2019 involved only 3 sunflowers planted in the Metges Rd former petrol station verge. These faired well and evolved into a pilot display of 17 flowers along the wall of Athlumney Hall in 2020. In 2021 we expanded to form an 8km trail through Johnstown with several hundred flowers planned for 30 sites. 2022 saw the route expanded to engage 4 schools, +200 people at fifty sites, and created a 10km route. 2023 has our aims firmly set on including residents' front gardens too!
Contact us if you would like to get involved with the next trail, perhaps to host a site, or simply help with the mass production of sunflowers.
