Dispersed Urban Orchard
Initiated 2021
Johnstown is blessed with a large number of trees but, as far as we are aware, there are no fruit trees in public spaces. Initiated by the Wild About Navan group the dispersed Urban Orchard is an opportunity to reverse a decades-long trend and reintroduce fruit trees. The project aims to host a network of pollinator-friendly trees in the Navan Neighbourhood under the management of local volunteers.

In 2021 we suggested several potentially suitable sites to the Wild About Navan group and two pilot sites were selected for Johnstown. Prior to planting a workshop was held in Nov 2021 at Solas Glan Community Garden with guidance given to representatives from each estate. Plants were distributed in January 2022 and a further workshop was held shortly afterward giving guidance on caring for the fruit trees.
Bailis Downs Estate
Initiated 2021 Planted 2022
Six trees were planted by residents in late January 2022 on the main green of the Bailis Downs Estate.
Nestling between the central shrubs and the residential homes the area is sheltered from some of the southerly breezes whilst being highly visible from the estate and main road but away from pedestrian pavements.
Crab apple, Blood of the Boyne Apple, Damson, and Cherry trees sit closely together alongside an area that hosts 5 holly trees and there are potential plans to host a native wildflower bed or six-week summer meadow.
2023 Update
One cherry tree perished and was replaced in 2023 together with 4 replacement tree stakes that were damaged by youths.
