Thanks to rapid advancements in technology and falling costs, high-precision weather stations are no longer just for meteorologists. Today’s devices are sophisticated, internet-ready, and incredibly user-friendly.
We are excited to announce our proposal to host a professional-grade weather station at the Johnstown Education Campus. This will provide our entire community with 24/7 access to live, hyper-local weather data.
An example of a modern weatherstation, this is made by ECOWITT
We aren't just collecting numbers; we’re looking for answers. By tracking our own local climate, we can test our assumptions and improve our daily lives. This data will help us answer:
Is the weather truly too bad to walk, or is it just a passing shower? We want to see if we can trade the car keys for walking shoes more often.
When exactly should we be flipping the heating on or off to save money?
Does Johnstown receive enough consistent sunshine to make solar panels a smart investment for your home?
Is the breeze strong enough to turn a wind turbine?
When is the actual first and last frost so we can protect our plants?
Is my garden soggy because of record rainfall, or do I have a drainage issue?
When is the best time to hook up water butts to prep for a summer drought?
We all know the wind feels biting, but we’ll measure exactly how much that "wind chill" affects our local environment.
Can we track and reduce storm-water runoff during heavy rains?
Whether you are a student learning about data in the classroom, a parent planning the morning commute, or a resident looking to lead a more sustainable life, this weather station is for you.
Our proposal was submitted as part of our application for the MCC Climate Action Funding 2025 and should know if we are successful in March 2026.
